I nearly always get to the gym at about 5:30pm and have noticed a massive difference in energy level depending on what I’ve eaten in the afternoon.
Typically I’m trying to keep carbs to a minimum since I tend to put on abdominal fat easily if I eat bread and simple carbs, but if i don’t eat a reasonable ammount of carbs at about 3pm, I feel like crap at the gym and run out of puff early.

So far I’ve found that fruit and popcorn work Ok. Anyone suggest other non-wheat complex carbs ? Is this an issue others have as well on a low carb diet ?

Try taking your post workout shake just before training!

Try a low GI bowl of 50/80gm Oats, water and a bit of taste like a few teaspoons of Milo & a sweetener like Splenda or Stevia, at mealtime an hour or 2 before the workout. DA

if you have to go for carbs try rye bread with grains, wholemeal pasta or something similar.

I find when low-carbing its just getting your body used to minimal carbs..you may have to go cold turkey for a couple of afternoons, when I need a carb fix I have a rice cracker with jam on 😀 works a treat 😉

I’ve trained whilst on low carb (especially zero bread & wheat) diets and have always had trouble when doing high intensity weight training. I don’t seem to get used to it ie really need the carbs for this type of work out. I find myself packing it in early and just running out of gas.

I’m fairly keen on popcorn for this purpose, and it turns out not to be so bad for you :
